接続詞とセットで使う表現

（２）not ～ but・・・、not only ～ but (also) ・・・

この２つは今でも覚えていらっしゃる方も多いのではないでしょうか。

※not ～ but・・・＝「～ではなく、・・・だ」

例文） 

Mary is not a teacher but a college student.

メアリーは教師ではなく大学生です。

Mr. Smith is not at home but in the office.

スミス氏は家ではなく、職場にいます。 

という感じに使います。

文の前半で「not ～」＝ではない、という打ち消しになっています。

それを素直に「～ではない」として、but以下の後半で「・・・です」とつなげます。

※not only ～ but (also) ・・・＝「～だけでなく・・・も」

例文）

We have to call not only John but also Susan.

Not only I but also they are bored with the TV program.

という感じに使います。not onlyの後には、単語・句・節などいろいろなパターンが来ます。

★前回と今回の表現が文章で主語になる場合

Both A and B＝複数扱いにして動詞を合わせる

（例）Both Tom and I are wrong.

Either A or B＝Bに動詞を合わせる

（例）Either you or Susan has to call Mr. Smith.

Not only A but B＝Bに動詞を合わせる

（例）Not only he but also I am sick.

これらは検定試験で問われそうですね、覚えておきましょう。
